Superhydrophobic Surfaces to Combat Bacterial Surface Colonization

چکیده

The recent COVID-19 pandemic and the accelerating rise of deaths associated with antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains have highlighted global health economic threats caused by super spreading pathogens. A major route transmission for pathogens is via surfaces contaminated touch or droplets generated sneezing coughing. Current surface disinfection strategies are having diminishing efficacy, due to increasing number superbugs short-lasting effect disinfectants resulting in recontamination. New inhibiting surface-mediated pathogen focus significant multi-disciplinary efforts. Among those, development superhydrophobic (SHS) increasingly regarded as a powerful alternative, additive, antimicrobial strategies. SHS provide neutral/inert interface that can prevent viral colonization. Here, use such water-repellent coatings critically reviewed impede pathogens, addressing challenges future directions their translation into real-world settings.

Primary bacterial colonization of implant surfaces.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of modifying titanium surfaces, in terms of wettability, roughness, and mode of sterilization, on the ability of the oral bacterium Streptococcus sanguis to colonize. An in vitro model system was developed. All surfaces were colonized by the bacteria, but to significantly different levels. Titanium samples that exhibited rough or hydrophobic (...

Influence of surface hierarchy of superhydrophobic surfaces on liquid slip.

We investigated how the surface hierarchy of superhydrophobic (SHPo) surfaces influences liquid slip by testing well-defined microposts that have nanoposts only on their top. Contrary to the commonly held belief, our results show that such hierarchical surfaces do not always lead to an increase of slip length despite their reduced solid fraction and enhanced hydrophobicity compared to single-sc...

Weak rolling adhesion enhances bacterial surface colonization.

Bacterial adhesion to and subsequent colonization of surfaces are the first steps toward forming biofilms, which are a major concern for implanted medical devices and in many diseases. It has generally been assumed that strong irreversible adhesion is a necessary step for biofilm formation. However, some bacteria, such as Escherichia coli when binding to mannosylated surfaces via the adhesive p...

Superhydrophobic surfaces reduce drag

Rare and common The hot grains of tektite and obsidian that show up in HD 172555’s IR spectrum are small enough that the star’s radiation pressure would drive them away from their current 6-AU orbit within 0.1 million years. The SiO molecules would likely condense and reform minerals on the same time scale. Given that rocky planets take 100 My to form, catching a giant impact in HD172555, despi...

Mechanically durable superhydrophobic surfaces.

Development of durable non-wetting surfaces is hindered by the fragility of the microscopic roughness features that are necessary for superhydrophobicity. Mechanical wear on superhydrophobic surfaces usually shows as increased sticking of water, leading to loss of non-wettability. Increased wear resistance has been demonstrated by exploiting hierarchical roughness where nanoscale roughness is p...
